#174 One day, a few years after the 74th Hunger Games, Rue’s youngest sister went out to play in the orchard with her best friend. He was a young boy from her music class, the one whose voice outshined all the others. As they climbed the trees together, he slipped from the highest limb and fell through the branches into the meadow below. The little girl’s shrill scream drew in a crowd, and they watched in silence as the boy’s breathing grew shallow, his eyes fluttering closed. As Rue’s sister kneeled next to him with tears streaming down her face, she saw his lips form one last word: Sing. So the little girl sang with all her heart, granting her friend his last request by trilling out a sweet ballad she had heard only once years before, the one that ended with the words “here is the place where I love you.”
